BIG Influence: A Kansas City Plumber’s Drive to Help

Morgan Miller Plumbing is giving a new meaning to “service call” this holiday season.

Through mid-December, the company’s service technicians are helping to collect nonperishable food, gently used clothing, new toys and small household appliances on behalf of the Community Assistance Council, a nonprofit that serves south Kansas City.

The technicians will drive to donors’ houses to pick up items. Morgan Miller customers can qualify for a $20 discount if they give.

“We’ve got the vehicles, and we’ve got the manpower,” said Jeff Morgan, the Overland Park plumbing repair company owner. “So we just schedule our men as if it’s a service call.”

Morgan got involved with the Community Assistance Council about three years ago, when he met Pam Meek, the organization’s programs coordinator, through the South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

Meek mentioned that CAC needed drivers for its Meals on Wheels program. That was something Morgan had always wanted to do, so he took it as a sign. Three years later, he still delivers meals at least once a week.

“There are a lot of elderly people who have lived in these neighborhoods for decades, and to be able to send them a warm meal every day helps keep them in their homes,” Morgan said.
