Made to Last: Before Roger The Plumber, There Was Arley The Plumber

Some of Roger Peugeot’s earliest memories are of helping his dad, Arley, with plumbing jobs. Their family business—which eventually became Roger The Plumber—has been serving Johnson County homeowners for more than 60 years.

“My dad was in the service, and when he got out, he had an opportunity for the GI Bill,” he said. “And he saw a sign that read, ‘Don’t envy a plumber, be one.’”

There are two big reasons why the company has endured, Peugeot said. No. 1, same-day customer service.

“It really comes down to taking care of people and giving them want they want,” he said. “And in terms of Kansas City plumbing service, they want fast service. Our trucks have 13,000 items on them—we even carry water heaters and toilets and garbage disposals—so our guys never have to leave a house and come back once they start a job.”

Another draw is Roger The Plumber’s up-front pricing, which guarantees the cost for services to be performed.

“That really made a big difference in my business,” Peugeot said. “There were some competitors around here that said, ‘You can’t do that,’ and now they’re doing it. Everybody has copied it.”
