Richard Salmen CFP Family Investment Center

CFP Board Chairman Joins Local Financial Planning Firm

A nationally recognized financial planning professional will bring his experience and clout to lead a new local office.

Richard Salmen has been named as president of financial planning services at St. Joseph-based Family Investment Center, which opened a Lenexa office Jan. 1. Family Investment Center is a fee-only financial planning and investment firm serving clients nationwide.

Salmen is 2018 chairman of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards’ board of directors and a past national president of the Financial Planning Association. CFP certification represents the highest standard in ethical and competent financial planning.

Before joining Family Investment Center, Salmen spent 16 years overseeing the financial planning practice at BOK Financial Corp/GTrust.

“We see our role as financial planners like a coaching role,” Salmen said in a news release. “We guide people to use their money more effectively in their lives. Money can be complicated, and it’s literally our role to make money make sense. This is the core of who we are and what we do.”

Dan Danford, founder and CEO of Family Investment Center, said Salmen will help the firm expand.

“Richard’s credentials and experience are extensive,” Danford said. “He will provide financial planning services that aren’t currently part of our offerings, except on an as-needed basis. This significantly broadens our scope to help solve client challenges at all levels.”

Salmen’s experience expands beyond finance. He is a retired professional air traffic controller, a job he did for 24 years. He also spent 14 years as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. But helping people invest their money “resonates deeply” with Salmen, he said.

“In reality, what we do is help people understand their money – and themselves – better, and this impacts their lives for years to come,” he said.
