Crowley Furniture’s 60-Year Secret? ‘Do the Hard Work’

The local chain of furniture stores was started by Charles and Marilyn Crowley in 1954 in Excelsior Springs, and over the years, it has grown to four locations. That includes three main showrooms in Liberty, Lee’s Summit and Overland Park, plus a newly opened outlet store at 6327 W. 119th St. in Overland Park.

Laura Crowley joined the company in 2003, the third generation of her family to be part of the business. Her father, Greg, has owned Crowley Furniture since 1985.

“It starts with my dad,” Laura Crowley said. “He’s really passionate about the industry and the business.”

There’s no single magic ingredient that gets a company to the 60-year mark, she said. Mostly, it’s about doing great work consistently for customers. It helps that Crowley’s is a relatively flat organization. If a client calls with a problem, it takes at most one transfer to get the caller to someone who can make things right.

“There’s no secret,” she said. “You’ve just got to get in there and do the hard work.”
