Custom Engineering Reflects Kansas City’s Growth

Look around and you can see all kinds of evidence that Kansas City construction companies have been busy “building Kansas City”—and the smaller engineering design firms and construction-related firms have played a huge role in those projects.

One of those companies is Custom Engineering, a local firm that specializes in mechanical, electrical, plumbing and lighting design. And, just as Kansas City has been exploding with growth, Custom Engineering too has seen significant expansion in a number of key areas, including services, geographic reach, jobs and projects.

Services

An award-winning firm led by CEO Joe Davis, Custom Engineering has designed systems for projects that range in size from small tenant finish rehabs to multimillion-dollar facilities. Licensed in 43 states, the company collaborates with developers, architectural, engineering and construction firms nationwide.

More recently, Custom Engineering has capitalized on these successes and leveraged advanced technologies to offer new services such as construction management and building commissioning.

Through their new construction management division, Custom Engineering assumes roles in various phases of a project—pre-design, design, procurement, construction and post-construction—to improve owner and stakeholder confidence in the potential success of the project or program.

Geographic Reach

After operating in Kansas City since 1974, Custom Engineering opened two branch locations, St. Louis, Mo., in 2010 and Wichita, Kan., in late 2015. Due to rapid growth in St. Louis, the company outgrew its space there and relocated to a larger facility in mid-2015.

Employees

New services and locations have led to more job creation for Custom Engineering. In just the past year, the firm added six employees, including several engineers and architect Mr. Frantz Sanon, who oversees the company’s construction management services. These professionals have joined Custom Engineering’s LEED-accredited team that is committed to designing a whole-building approach to energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality.

Projects

Although Custom Engineering’s contributions to a project often take place behind the scenes, the projects themselves are usually very visible and high-profile. Their latest job in Kansas City, for example, was providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing and lighting design for the KC Streetcar’s 24,982-square-foot vehicle maintenance facility. The project also included lighting revisions to accommodate new power poles for streetcar propulsion and the power distribution to streetcar station stops for the streetcar’s main line.
