Kauffman Announces KC Accelerator Challenge to Boost Local Programs

The Kauffman Foundation is launching a new grant program to help Kansas City’s accelerator programs—and more news could be coming soon.

The KC Accelerator Challenge will provide a one-to-one funding match for approved local accelerator programs. Applicants must offer a structured curriculum or technical assistance, or they must assist an underrepresented population. Officials are also looking for novel programs that could be the basis for further research.

“A vibrant community must invest in a variety of organizations that have a track record of increasing the success of early-stage entrepreneurs and accelerating business through growth,” said Wendy Guillies, president and CEO of the Kauffman Foundation. “The KC Accelerator Challenge will directly support organizations that are helping Kansas City to become America’s most entrepreneurial city.”

The application window will open Nov. 16 and close on Feb. 15.

“Kansas City has many of the ingredients for a strong ecosystem for entrepreneurs,” said Victor Hwang, vice president of entrepreneurship at Kauffman. “The KC Accelerator Challenge is part of the Kauffman Foundation’s comprehensive approach to address barriers that too many of our entrepreneurs face in Kansas City and the Midwest.”

The foundation said the KC Accelerator Challenge is part of an effort to help entrepreneurs struggling with “geographic market gaps.” That’s why it plans to announce a new project Monday to encourage capital formation expertise in Kansas City and throughout the Midwest.
