The holiday season is here, and for a lot of people, it’s a time for giving gifts. Before you drive to the mall or head to Amazon.com, though, I’d encourage you to check out the locally owned shops just down the street.
If you do, you’re more likely to find gift ideas for everyone on your list. Locally owned stores tend to carry unique, original items you can’t find at the big box stores—often because these gifts were made by a person instead of a machine. The clerks are usually more knowledgeable, too, so they’ll be able to help you find a present that’s tailored to your loved ones’ hobbies and interests.
As you walk up and down the aisles, you’ll find your basket is filling with all sorts of presents. You might even feel a rush of accomplishment that you’re finishing your shopping early. But there’s another reason for your good vibes: When you buy your holiday presents from local retailers, you’re also giving a gift to your community.
By buying local, you’ve supported local business owners who give back to the community, ones who coach little league soccer and are always willing to write a check or volunteer at the local shelter.
They won’t be able to give back to the community if people don’t shop at their stores. The sales from now to the end of the year are a critical portion of a small business’s overall annual income. Many local business owners also use this surge in revenue to sustain themselves through the beginning-of-the-year slowdown.
When you shop with local businesses, you give back to your community. You’re supporting the parks, schools and other things that make Kansas City a great place to live.
