British Government Launches ‘Pop-Up Consulate’ in KC

For the next five days, the British Consulate in Chicago is relocating to Kansas City for a “pop-up consulate.”

In partnership with the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City, the consulate will host a series of educational and cultural events. An opening ceremony is planned for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Power & Light Building in downtown Kansas City, Mo., followed by a 6 p.m. launch party at the National World War I Museum. A full schedule of events is available at this website.

The goal of the pop-up consulate is to build relationships and get more local entrepreneurs interested in trade with the United Kingdom.

There’s already growing interest. From 2013 to 2014, the Kansas City region’s exports to the UK increased by 10.9 percent, said Narbeli Galindo, the EDC’s coordinator for international business development initiatives. The United Kingdom says it’s the largest foreign investor in Missouri.

“They were very excited to move their offices here for one week,” Galindo said.

Canada and Mexico, historically, are this region’s top trading partners, due mostly to proximity. But the United Kingdom can be an attractive partner because it shares a similar language and culture with the United States, Galindo said—removing one potential hurdle to doing business in another country.

This is the third pop-up consulate the British government has organized, after events in Louisville and Minneapolis.
