Clair de Lune, MADI Apparel Team Up to Help Abused Women

Two local business—clair de lune lingerie boutique and MADI Apparel—are teaming up in January to help women escaping from domestic violence.

The Great Bra Exchange is a 12-year tradition for clair de lune. Customers donate their gently used bras and, in exchange, receive a $15 gift certificate toward a new bra. More than 20,000 bras have been collected over the years. The exchange will run Jan. 2-17.

And this year, clair de lune is working with MADI Apparel, a young company that produces women’s underpants. MADI’s products will now be sold in clair de lune, and for each new pair sold, another will be donated to Hope House, a nonprofit that helps people hurt by domestic violence.

Many women leave abusive homes with only the clothes on their back, and shelters regularly need undergarments for their clients.

“Our customers and staff look forward to the Great Bra Exchange,” said Terry Levine, clair de lune owner. “But this year we can donate bras and underwear. We hope to be able to donate another 2,000 to 2,500 bras again this year, and who knows how many new pairs of underwear.”

To celebrate the partnership, MADI Apparel and clair de lune will host an event from 4 to 7 p.m. Jan. 5 at clair de lune’s location in the Hawthorne Plaza shopping center.

“We’re so excited that clair de lune will offer MADI Apparel beginning in January, and the Great Bra Exchange is a wonderful way to launch the brand here,” said Hayley Besheer, founder and CEO of MADI Apparel. “Their ongoing support of women in domestic violence shelters is a perfect fit for our brand and our mission.”
