Dark Horse Distillery—featured on the November cover of Thinking Bigger Business magazine—is rolling out another special release just in time for Thanksgiving.
This will be the second year in a row that Dark Horse has sold its Barrel Strength Reunion Rye Whiskey. It’ll be available starting on Nov. 24 at stores, bars and eateries in Kansas City.
The whiskey combines toffee, maple and caramel flavors, with just a bit of ginger and cinnamon spice. Its recipe calls for 100 percent rye mash and is around 113 proof.
“It’s coming straight from the barrel, as opposed to reverse-proofing it down with distilled water,” master distiller Patrick Garcia said in the recent cover story.
The whiskey also happened to win a gold medal in the American Craft Distillers Association’s craft spirits judging for 2014 and took home a first place from this year’s Washington Cup Spirits Invitational.
The distillery was founded in 2010 by the Garcia siblings—Patrick, Damian, Eric and Mary. Based in Lenexa, the Garcias not only make award-winning vodka and whiskey, they’ve also found a popular sideline hosting events and tours at their production facility in Lenexa. The company’s spirits can be purchased at about 325 shops, restaurants and taverns in Kansas and Missouri.
“Our spirits have a lot more variety in flavor than you get in other larger bourbons out there,” Patrick Garcia said. “In the process, we don’t strip a lot of that flavor out. At other distilleries, they chill-filter their whiskey. We don’t use those shortcuts and techniques.”
