Donation More Than Doubles Union Station’s Supply of 3D Printers

Great news for local makers: Union Station has received nine new 3D printers for its Make Studio, bringing its arsenal of printers to 15.

The devices’ manufacturer, Ultimaker of the Netherlands, donated them to Union Station. They’ll be used in the Maker Studio’s educational efforts, as well as inventor-themed events like Make48. (That competition is scheduled for Oct. 2-4.)

Even better, the gift, worth about $21,000, should create room in the Maker Studio’s budget so that it can acquire laser cutters and other devices, manager Luis Rodriguez said.

“With these models, we not only have the ability to print items up to one foot tall but most importantly, because of their size, we gain the portability that will make it even easier to deliver and support Science City’s hands-on programming,” Rodriguez said.

The Maker Studio is open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. (It’s closed Sunday.) Access is included in Science City admission or Union Station membership.
