One in a Million Pitch Contest to Include KC’s Blooom

This week’s edition of 1 Million Cups is going to be a little different. Normally, two startups pitch their companies to a room full of fellow entrepreneurs.

At 9 a.m. Nov. 18, though, five companies from across the country—including Kansas City’s own blooom—will compete in the first-ever One in a Million national pitch competition at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center. They’ll be vying for a $10,000 grand prize, plus runner-up awards of $5,000 and $1,000.

The presenters include:

  • Max Aram, Pick My Solar, Los Angeles, California
  • Clarence Bethea, Upsie, Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • Chris Costello, blooom, Leawood, Kansas
  • David Naumann, DryBox, San Antonio, Texas
  • Matthew Rooda, SwineTech, New Sharon, Iowa

Those five companies were selected from 377 entrants, all of whom had previously presented at 1 Million Cups. The final judges will be Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, Techstars partner Nicole Glaros and Miriam Rivera, Google’s first vice president and deputy general counsel.
