Food Truck Face-Off to Showcase KC’s Best New Food Trucks

When they were putting together the schedule for 1Week KC, organizers decided to save the best for last.

The weeklong celebration of Kansas City entrepreneurship will wrap up with the first-ever Food Truck Face-Off at The Roasterie. Four young food-truck operations, each less than a year old, will compete to be named the Food Truck Rookie of the Year.

The evening will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday at 1204 W. 27th St. in Kansas City, Mo. Admission costs $35 per person and will include four half-entrée servings. Plus, Cinder Block Brewery and Rock & Run Brewery will be giving out samples.

You can register for the Food Truck Face-Off at this website, and or pay at the event on Friday.

The competitors include:

bochiBochi Truck—probably best known for its stuffed boneless chicken wings

Cheeesy Pops’ Pizza, the makers of wood-fired pizza

Plantain District, which focuses on Cuban-style food

Pie Hole, whose specialty is Australian-style meat pies

Audience members will be invited to download a special app and vote for the best truck based on food, customer service and presentation. A panel of celebrity judges will name their top truck as well.

Local food writer Pete Dulin will serve as emcee and conduct live interviews with each competitor. And organizers have invited speakers who will talk about the challenges facing food-truck and arts entrepreneurs.

The Food Truck Face-Off also happens to be the culminating event for the Mid-Continent Public Library’s recent six-week course on food trucks.

The free classes, which were designed to share practical business advice with new and aspiring food truck operators, were very popular. The library and its partners are already planning a second round for this fall or next spring, said Morgan Perry, a business specialist at Mid-Continent.
