JJ’s restaurant will reopen Nov. 12 in its new home in the Plaza Vista building, 900 W. 48th Place, several months after it was destroyed by a gas explosion and fire in February 2013.
JJ’s will reopen at 5 p.m. for dinner with such returning patrons as Kansas City Mayor Sly James.
“Don’t let anyone say that Kansas City isn’t one of the best cities in the country,” said Jimmy Frantze, JJ’s operator, in a release. “The support from the community during all the trials and tribulations and rebuilding has been amazing, and I am so proud to call Kansas City home.”
The new JJ’s is intended to evoke memories of the old JJ’s, with a similarly warm bar and dining room ambiance and a familiar menu. In fact, the dinner menu on Nov. 12 will be the same as on the last day of business at JJ’s previous location.
Paintings by Mike Savage will remain a decorative focus as they were at the old location, along with arched doorways and terra cotta walls to give guests the feeling that they are “still in JJ’s,” said interior designer Jan Russell of Johanna Marr Design.
“JJ’s used to wrap its arms around you,” Russell said, “and I wanted to bring back that same feeling in a brand new, modern office building.”
Many of JJ’s award-winning wines, including valued older vintages that were stored off site at the time of the fire, will again be offered, including 60 different table wines.
“We’ll open with a great champagne list,” said Matt Nichols, JJ’s managing partner.
Megan Cramer, a server at JJ’s who lost her life in the JJ’s fire, will be memorialized with a plaque in the restaurant’s new location.
JJ’s will be open for lunch at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and for dinner seven days a week. Happy hour will be 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
JJ’s will continue to evolve, “but it remains JJ’s, the place, the feel, the family we all love,” Frantze said. “We’re back.”
