Mid-America Angels Adds ClaimKit, Hilary’s Eat Well to Portfolio

Last year, the Mid-America Angels invested more than $2.3 million in the region’s most promising young companies.

The network of angel investors started working with ClaimKit, Core23 BioBank, Hilary’s Eat Well and Bulu Box in 2014, and made capital infusions in two other companies they’ve previously invested in.

Bulu Box ships a mix of nutrition, weight loss and health supplements to customers each month. Based in Lincoln, it’s a graduate of the Pipeline Entrepreneurial Fellowship.

Overland Park’s ClaimKit has developed a software solution that helps insurance professionals manage their claims and documents more easily.

Core23 BioBank of Springfield is a blood bank that specializes in preserving blood from a baby’s umbilical cord. That blood carries stem cells that can be used later to treat cancers, blood disorders and other illnesses.

Hilary’s Eat Well of Lawrence, a 25 Under 25® alumnus, sells a line of healthy foods, and it’s best known for its veggie burger.

“The strength of MAA’s portfolio is the result of many hours of hard work contributed by our angel investors to review opportunities, complete the necessary due diligence and structure the deals,” said Rick Vaughn, MAA managing director and the Enterprise Center of Johnson County’s vice president of business development.

The organization also has presented its Outstanding Angel Contribution Award for Kip Wiggins, a partner at Stinson Leonard Street and a member of Mid-America Angels since it was launched. At Stinson Leonard Street, Wiggins serves on the firm’s venture capital and emerging companies practice.

“Kip has always been a leader within MAA when it comes to due diligence and deal structure and as a result it seemed fitting to recognize him with MAA’s Outstanding Angel Contribution Award,” Vaughn said.
