#OneDayKC Brings Together College-Age Entrepreneurs

Students from seven local universities will take part in #OneDayKC, a new event on April 24 that’s designed to encourage collaboration among college entrepreneurs.

odkcThe students will divide into teams and, over the course of 12 hours, compete and build a business. Organizers describe it as “Startup Weekend on steroids, but a younger demographic.”

The Sprint Accelerator and Think Big Partners will provide temporary workspace. The winning concept will take part in next weekend’s GigHacks hackathon.

The #OneDayKC program also will feature talks from Leo Morton, the chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City; Ashley Hand, chief innovation officer of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and other community leaders.

“Universities in the region tend to silo themselves, which in turn kills innovation,” according to Zach Pettet, the founder of #OneDayKC and a senior at UMKC. “If we could break down these walls and collaborate, the possibilities are endless.”

Bradley Dice, a William Jewell student, and Sarah Jones, a student at Rockhurst University, are #OneDayKC’s co-founders.

The #OneDayKC contest will include 25 graduate and undergraduate students, as well as five high-school students from the Blue Valley Center for Advanced Professional Studies.
