Sherry Turner, TK Architects, Missouri Star Quilt Co. Win MO Business Awards

Several Kansas City area business leaders took home awards from this year’s Missouri Governor’s Conference on Economic Development.

Sherry Turner, the founder of OneKC for Women, received the Missouri Women’s Council Award of Distinction. Turner—who won the 25 Under 25® Entrepreneurial Legacy Award earlier this year—has been a powerful advocate for women who are starting businesses, searching for jobs and pursuing economic independence. OneKC for Women is an alliance that includes the Women’s Business Center, the Women’s Employment Network and the Women’s Capital Connection.

The Missouri Star Quilt Company, based in nearby Hamilton, Mo., was named the Governor’s Rural Community/Redevelopment Project of the Year. The brother-sister team of Alan Doan and Sarah Galbraith has creating a thriving collection of brick-and-mortar quilting shops in Hamilton, along with what’s believed to be the largest quilting e-commerce site in the world. They were previously recognized as the U.S. Small Business Administration’s National Small Business Persons of the Year.

TK Architects International Inc., which specializes in theaters and other entertainment architecture, won the Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award. Between 2012 and 2014, the firm saw its export sales grow by 700 percent, and it has done work for clients in 42 countries. TK Architects is a previous winner of the 25 Under 25® Award.
