Square Co-Founder Jim McKelvey to Appear at Techweek KC

Jim McKelvey, the co-founder of Square, will be a featured speaker at next month’s Techweek Kansas City festival.

McKelvey, a St. Louis native, will appear on Sept. 17 during a talk at Union Station. The Kauffman Foundation, a title sponsor of Techweek KC, is bringing McKelvey to town.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Jim will be joining us at Techweek KC,” said Techweek CEO Katy Lynch. “He’s second to none as a tech entrepreneur, and this is an incredible opportunity for all of us to learn from his wisdom and experiences.”

McKelvey is a founder of Cultivation Capital, a V.C. firm based in St. Louis, and LaunchCode, a nonprofit that creates “on-ramps” to technology jobs for people who might not have traditional four-year degrees.

While McKelvey might be best known for launching Square’s mobile payment service, he also developed Look, one of the first document-imaging systems for personal computers, for Mira Digital Publishing. And his entrepreneurial experience isn’t strictly digital—he helped start Third Degree Glass Factory, a glass-blowing company, before Square.

Techweek Kansas City will run Sept. 14-20. This is the first time for Kansas City to host the weeklong celebration of technology and entrepreneurship. Only six U.S. cities have their own Techweek events.
