Support KC Shops, Restaurants on Small Business Saturday

If you’re planning to celebrate Small Business Saturday this weekend, you’ll be in good company.

kramer-douglasThousands of shoppers will be visiting independently owned shops and restaurants—including SBA Deputy Administrator Douglas Kramer, who grew up in Kansas City and will be in town. He plans to visit a handful of local stores and grab lunch with Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sly James.

At the top of Kramer’s must-visit list? Christopher Elbow Chocolates. “They make such amazingly good gifts,” he said.

As a major backer of Small Business Saturday, the U.S. Small Business Administration is partnering with several private-sector partners, including American Express, FedEx and dozens of other major corporations, to draw attention to small businesses.

Right now, the airwaves are full of commercials for big retailers, and Small Business Saturday is a great way to put the spotlight back on the smaller businesses that make up the fabric of so many communities, Kramer said.

This is the sixth year for the promotion. According to a survey from American Express and the National Federation of Independent Business, about 77 percent of respondents plan to buy at local shops this holiday season.

Several neighborhood retailers are teaming up for special promotions this weekend, too. Waldo, for example, will host a Shop Small Saturday Crawl from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and customers can become eligible for gift cards and other prizes. Similar promotions are planned for the downtown areas in Lee’s Summit and Overland Park, along with the Crossroads Arts District and Brookside. Full details are available here.
