Advertising firm Walz Tetrick has just won an international award for a billboard that it designed for the Kansas City Royals last year.
The firm received a gold in the CLIO Sports Awards, which celebrate excellence in sports marketing and advertising.
You might remember seeing the winning billboard. It shows Alex Gordon sliding into the base—and going so fast that it looks like he’s tearing the billboard away from its backing.
“For KC fans, this execution visually represents what it means to ‘Be Royal,’” said Charlie Tetrick, the Mission-based firm’s president. “The Royals are a tremendous client with a marketing team that understands the value of breakthrough creative. It is an honor to receive national recognition for our work together.”
Walz Tetrick, which became the Royals’ agency of record in late 2012, created a similar display in 2013. It was actually two billboards—one featuring pitcher James Shields and the other showing his pitch “tearing up the billboard” as it streaked toward catcher Salvador Perez. The billboards earned national attention from outlets like Adweek and Buzzfeed.
“We’re pleased that our campaign draws positive international attention to Kansas City and our region, said Mike Bucek, vice president of marketing and business development for the Royals.”Each year we strive to be authentic while highlighting the attributes of our great ball players and loyal fan base.”
