KCMO Presses Play on New Film Incentive Program

Film, TV and commercial productions can now officially apply for a new incentive program for projects filmed in Kansas City, Mo.

The city council approved the film incentive program back in February, and applications are now open. The program has an annual cap of $75,000. Approved productions can receive up to a 7.5 percent rebate.

The incentive has already attracted interest from the makers of “All Creatures Here Below,” a movie that’ll star Kansas native David Dastmalchian. It’s about a couple on the run who end up in Kansas City. And filmmaker Morgan Dameron, who’s from the area, has talked about filming her Kickstarter-powered movie, “Different Flowers,” here.

Kansas City’s program is unusual because, while the city is offering an incentive, the state of Missouri isn’t. Program leaders don’t know of any other community where that’s the case.

“This type of incentive is a draw in the film industry and communicates that Kansas City is open for business,” said Stephane Scupham, KC Film Commissioner and Visit KC film and new media manager. “Being the only city with a local incentive without a state incentive is a unique position to be in. We want to relay a message that Kansas City is serious about attracting business, and we hope the state will follow suit.”
