Appearing on ‘The Profit’ Could Mean Big Changes for The Lano Co.

Being featured on “The Profit” is leading to big changes and new opportunities for The Lano Company, a Raymore business that makes lanolin-based cosmetics.

Lano was featured on last night’s episode of the CNBC reality show. The show’s star, serial entrepreneur Marcus Lemonis, invested $500,000 in the company for a 20 percent stake. In return, he pushed owners Miranda and Layne Coggins to make a series of changes in how Lano operates. (You can watch the full episode here.)

That included revamping Lano’s lineup of products, packaging and branding in the space of about two weeks. Lemonis introduced the Cogginses to a third-party manufacturer and contacts at the QVC shopping network and Birchbox, a national subscription-box business. He also has signed a five-year contract for space for The Lano Company in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

Lano even launched a brand new Pure Lano website yesterday afternoon.

Going into this process, the Cogginses had predicted that Lemonis would push them to invest more in their production capacity. They didn’t foresee that he’d suggest outsourcing that function so they could focus more on product development, sales and marketing.

Things are going to stay busy in the coming months, Miranda Coggins said. Lano will continue rolling out more of its rebranded Pure Lano products. (The lip balm and lip gloss are already on sale online.)

She thought the show turned out very well. “The Profit” completed filming only a few weeks ago, and she didn’t know what parts of the 70-some hours’ worth of video would be included in the finished product. The Cogginses saw the show for the first time at a big watch party last night.

Miranda Coggins and Lemonis butted heads a few times during the episode, but she said the experience has been incredibly valuable for the company.

“We knew it was going to be hard going in,” Miranda Coggins said, but “we came out stronger for the situation.”
