Local startup Mobility Designed will represent Kansas City tonight at Fueling the Growth, a pitch contest in Stamford, Connecticut.
The company—which has designed a better type of crutch—is one of 10 finalists that were picked to present their ideas to a panel of judges. At stake is $120,000 in grant money.
Fueling the Growth is a joint effort of the Kauffman Foundation, Uber and The Refinery, a Connecticut-based accelerator. It’s designed to encourage young, high-potential businesses that are led by women.
Mobility Designed is owned by married couple Lilian and Max Younger. They’ve created a crutch that allows users to rest their weight on their forearms instead of their wrists, which can be very painful for people who rely on crutches every day.
In addition to being selected for Fueling the Growth, Mobility Designed was a winner of a $50,000 LaunchKC grant earlier this fall. It also was a finalist for a Fast Company design innovation award.
Contestants in Kansas City and a handful of cities competed for a spot in tonight’s event by delivering a short presentation during an Uber ride last month. Three other Kansas City startups—ConsultUS Technologies, PopBookings and Play-it Health—were invited to compete in Stamford as semifinalists.
“Our goal in hosting Fueling the Growth with UberPITCH was to get as many women entrepreneurs, as possible, in one on one meetings with investors to pitch their companies and get feedback” said Janis Collins, co-founder of The Refinery.
