The Johnson County Park & Recreation District (JCPRD) recently awarded Harmon Construction work on the Meadowbrook Park Improvements and Activity Building project in Prairie Village. The $8.3 million project is being built on 80 acres of land on the former Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club property.
The development will include picnic areas, playgrounds, gardens, a 3.75-mile system of paved trails that encircle ponds and multiple open space areas, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a lawn game area, ponds for water-based activities, freestanding park restrooms, public gathering spaces and shelters, and a grand pavilion.
Construction will also include a 12,300-square-foot activity center designed to anchor the park and also accommodate public events, activities and an early childhood education program. The building’s banquet room will hold events for up to 200 people and will overlook a landscaped plaza area and oval lawn.
Several Thinking Bigger Business Media 25 Under 25 alumni have been involved in the project. Harmon Construction (Class of 2002) is the selected contractor collaborating with Landworks Studio (Class of 2016), the lead design firm for the park. JCPRD hired Landworks to complete the master plan for the park and was subsequently retained to complete the final design and construction documents of the park. Landworks teamed with consultants Shockey Consulting Services (Class of 2015) to head up the public involvement components of the project and Affinis Corporation (Class of 2012) to provide civil engineering and traffic consulting.
Other firms involved in the project include SFS Architecture, which was hired by JCPRD to provide architectural design services for the activity building, and Lightworks, to provide electrical engineering and lighting design.
Work at the site is underway. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for April 2018.
