ModernCoalition: ‘House of Cards’ Meets ‘Clash of Clans’

A new Kansas City startup, ModernCoalition, wants to use mobile gaming as a way to get more voters, especially Millennials, interested in the political process.

The free-to-play, nonpartisan game lets players take stands on issues, form coalitions and work together to accomplish in-game goals. The creators plan to roll out the app to a wider audience early next year, just in time for the presidential primary season. A beta version should be available soon for Apple and Android.

ModernCoalition may offer in-app purchases, but its plan is to generate revenue through advertising from nonprofits, small businesses and political groups.

People are already taking notice of ModernCoalition’s potential. More than 500,000 people have signed up to play ModernCoalition. This summer, the startup raised $350,000 in investment, and the majority of that came from Scott Ingraham, the founder of Rent.com.

“Closing this round allows for Modern-Coalition to continue focusing on creating a beautiful user experience and a fun and engaging game,” company president and founder Christian Blake said.
