The Good News about Small Business

The SBA helps entrepreneurs grow their companies and the economy.

Who drives innovation, creates two out of every three new jobs and acts as a foundation for America’s prosperity? Entrepreneurs and small business owners do.

The U.S. Small Business Administration is the federal agency that helps Americans start and grow small businesses. We also provide help following federally declared disasters.

As SBA regional administrator for Region VII—the states of Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas—one of my roles is to make sure as many people as possible know about our programs and initiatives. I love my job because everywhere I go, I bring good news. I know our agency truly helps people because as I travel I meet small business owners who are succeeding and truly appreciate the help they have received from government and nonprofit assistance providers.

The SBA makes financing easier to access for borrowers through our federal loan guarantees and lending partnerships with financial institutions. We help small businesses locate and land federal contracts and subcontracts by working with other federal agencies and large federal contractors on their behalf. We fund and partner with nonprofit agencies, state governments and educational institutions to offer a great group of small business resource providers to the public: Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers, Veterans Business Centers and the SCORE organization, to name a few. Together with our district offices, we make face-to-face small business counseling and training available at low or no cost. And at www.sba.gov, we provide extensive training, helpful blog articles and an online support community to help you find answers to your questions.

SBA research shows that entrepreneurs and small business owners who take advantage of SBA and other resources are more likely to succeed. Over a lifetime, every small business faces challenges, and overcoming them depends on finding the right help at the right time.
